Here in Asia, they celebrate not just one new year, but TWO!! Songkran is a New Years people in most of Southeast Asia celebrate. Traditionally it's a time for people to visit and pay respects to elders, or family members, friends, neighbors, and/or monks. It pretty much lasts between 3 to 5 days in mid April. Jenny and I celebrated in Bangkok's "backpacker" heart - Khao San Rd.
While I knew Songkran was going to be nuts, even our teachers in U Thong told us how crazy it'd be, I had no idea what I was truly getting myself into. Holy.....chaos. It was great it the beginning, never ending water fights, music blaring all over, but then with what the weather being overcast and for the first time in a long time - chilly, being wet constantly was not so pleasant. I mean I enjoyed myself regardless because I was able to watch and be surrounded by so many happy smiling Thais and having people come up and smile this kind of smile before dumping ice water on you or before smearing you with this paste (baby powder water mixture) wishing you happy new year and saying "jub jub" (kiss kiss) with the gesture. hahaha.
